When does a series of lines, curves, and edges form a face in our mind? Our brains are so well-adapted to recognize human faces that we can see them in almost any visual environment: clouds, tree bark, even pieces of toast. The neurological experience of viewing a statue or portrait is equivalent to that of seeing a person. In this work, I explore the liminal space around human face perception. I am interested in the experience of perception. Even though there is no “real” “face” on the screen, at some point in the video we might begin to see a face emerging from the randomly distributed pixels. What does vision feel like when we are part of its construction process?
